The Biomedical Research and Application Center (BAMER) is a leading facility dedicated to advanced biomedical research and clinical applications. Our center houses state-of-the-art equipment and cutting-edge technologies that support groundbreaking research in medicine, biotechnology, and life sciences.
B@MER provides comprehensive research support services including advanced imaging, molecular diagnostics, cell culture facilities, and biobanking. Our multidisciplinary team of researchers and technicians work collaboratively to advance scientific knowledge and develop innovative solutions for healthcare challenges. The center serves as a bridge between basic research and clinical applications, facilitating translational research that benefits patients and society.

Laboratories
Advanced Rehabilitation Technologies Laboratory is led by Assoc. Prof. Buket A. Barutçu and focuses on modern, technology-driven rehabilitation approaches. The laboratory works on virtual reality, e-health, and tele-rehabilitation, alongside sensor-based and robotic rehabilitation technologies. It also supports exercise science through IoT-supported exercise training and develops biomedical rehabilitation devices to improve patient outcomes through advanced healthcare integration.
Biostatistics / Bioinformatic Unit, coordinated by Prof. Dr. Yusuf Çelik, strengthens health research through statistical and computational methods. It covers the contribution of statistics to research, how biostatistics solves problems in health research, and evidence-based decision-making frameworks, with an emphasis on reducing high error rates in health-related decisions that can lead to critical outcomes. The unit also specializes in computational drug discovery areas such as molecular docking, molecular dynamics (MD) simulation, computer-aided drug design (CADD), and drug repurposing strategies.
Artificial Intelligence Laboratory is directed by Prof. Dr. Özgür K. Şahingöz and develops applied AI solutions across multiple domains. Its work spans QSAR and GNN-based approaches in drug discovery, the integration of humanoid robots with LLMs, and embedding LLMs into customer service platforms. The laboratory also builds systems such as an AI-based flight control system for drones, vision-based surveillance, AI-based anomaly detection in networks, and the integration of path planning algorithms in TurtleBots, with an additional focus on AI-driven applications including medical imaging, diagnostic systems, and personalized medicine use cases.
Neuroscience Laboratory, led by Prof. Dr. Oytun Erbaş, is positioned as a core research group within the Biruni Research Center’s interdisciplinary ecosystem. The laboratory supports neuroscience-oriented research activities and provides an academic framework for studies in the broader field of brain and nervous system science.
Microbiology Research Laboratory is headed by Asst. Prof. Yağmur E. Merdan and investigates key microbiology challenges with both scientific and translational goals. Its research includes antimicrobial resistance, antimicrobial substance discovery, biosensors, microbial ecology, and microbial biofilms, as well as viral and bacterial epidemiology. The laboratory also works on gut microbiome analysis, disease-specific probiotic formulation, and personalized probiotic design, and conducts applied studies such as industrial final product development and dietary supplement production. In addition, it carries out experimental autism and experimental Alzheimer’s modeling studies.
Medical Genetics Laboratory is supervised by Asst. Prof. Nermin Akçalı and functions as a research laboratory within the Biruni Research Center structure. It provides a laboratory setting for medical genetics–oriented work and interdisciplinary collaboration related to genetic and genomic health research.
Drug Discovery & Design and Sensor Laboratory, managed by Asst. Prof. Nilüfer Koçyiğit, combines pharmaceutical innovation with materials, analytical, and sensor technologies. Its drug discovery and design work includes active pharmaceutical ingredient (API) design, synthesis, characterization, and structure–activity relationship studies, as well as inhibitor screening on acetylcholinesterase and butyrylcholinesterase. The laboratory also advances antioxidant research, nanotechnology, green chemistry, sensors, photodynamic therapy, electrochemistry, and supercapacitor-related studies. In parallel, it runs biochemical research in basic medical sciences, immunology and cytokine pathways, oxidative stress and antioxidant defense, and nutrition and metabolic diseases, supporting sustainable and effective pharmaceutical solutions.
Cell Biology & Functional Genomics Laboratory is led by Asst. Prof. Zihni Onur Çalışkaner and conducts advanced studies in cellular and molecular biology with a strong functional genomics component. The laboratory focuses on cell culture, gene expression and functional genomics, nucleic acid and protein-based studies, and bioinformatics analyses for data interpretation. It supports drug candidate molecule discovery and contributes to understanding rare diseases and genetic disorders, while also developing in vitro mutation analysis approaches. In vitro gene transfer methods such as transfection and viral transduction are core strengths, alongside stem cell research including iPSC production, disease model generation, and stem cell differentiation.
Protein Engineering Laboratory, under Assoc. Prof. Huri Demirci, explores proteins from fundamental mechanisms to therapeutic design. It investigates protein interactions inside the cell, advances the understanding of protein–protein interactions, and develops new protein designs for targeted therapies. The laboratory works on modifying functional properties and biological activities of proteins, improving protein stability and folding, and performing structural analyses to support both basic research and applied biomedical innovation.
Biotechnology III Tissue Engineering and Cancer Research Laboratory is supervised by Asst. Prof. Nur E. Gürcan and brings together molecular biology, bioengineering, and biomaterials for translational research. Its primary focus areas include cancer stem cells and functional transcriptomics, alongside regenerative applications such as bone tissue engineering and gingival tissue engineering.
Regenerative Medicine Laboratory, led by Assoc. Prof. Nazlı Ece Güngör, advances research in cellular therapies and tissue regeneration through integrated experimental platforms. It conducts stem and cancer cell culture, photodynamic therapy studies, cytotoxicity assays, and investigations into cell death pathways, supported by bioinformatics analysis and gene panel development. The laboratory also develops translational tools such as diagnostic kits and performs biocompatibility tests, while expanding technical capacity through microfluidic chip analyses, cffDNA isolation method development, and immunohistochemistry.
Genomics Research Laboratory is directed by Assoc. Prof. Elif Sibel Aslan and focuses on comprehensive genomic research and advanced therapeutic technologies. Its work includes genome sequencing, genome mapping, genomic variation and function analyses, comparative genomics, and linking mutations to disease associations. The laboratory also addresses modern intervention strategies such as genetic manipulations and CRISPR-based approaches, CAR-T cell therapies, and pharmacogenomics, supported by bioinformatics and data analysis. In parallel, it explores epigenomics and epigenetics, including non-coding RNAs, DNA methylation, histone modifications, epigenomic mapping, and gene silencing mechanisms, and conducts cell culture and transfection studies.
Molecular Biology and Genetics Laboratory is led by Prof. Dr. Zehra Durmuş and serves as a core laboratory supporting molecular biology and genetics research within an interdisciplinary environment. The laboratory provides an academic foundation for research activities across molecular and genetic sciences. Molecular Biology and Genetics Laboratory is equipped with advanced technologies, including DNA/RNA isolation, next-generation sequencing, and flow cytometry, enabling joint use across disciplines.
Cutting-Edge Drug Delivery Laboratory, headed by Prof. Dr. İsmail Tuncer Değim, covers a wide spectrum from nanotechnology to toxicology and natural product research. It develops drug delivery systems and studies carbon quantum dots, pharmacokinetics, and transdermal/topical penetration. Its pharmaceutical toxicology portfolio includes mycotoxins, endocrine disruptors, chemical environmental pollutants, in vitro epigenetic mechanisms, lipotoxicity, epigenetic endoplasmic reticulum stress, chemical carcinogenesis, and in silico methods. The laboratory also performs extensive natural and herbal content research, spanning ecology, medicinal plants, plant anatomy and morphology, secondary metabolites, biological activity studies, plant systematics, plant reproduction and conservation biology, palynology, and antioxidant activity, including the isolation and structural elucidation of natural compounds and the assessment of activities such as antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, and antidiabetic effects.
Advanced Materials Laboratory is directed by Prof. Dr. Zehra Durmuş and focuses on designing and characterizing advanced functional materials for diverse engineering applications. The laboratory synthesizes and characterizes magnetic nanoparticles and nanocomposites and works on microwave/radar absorbing materials (RAMs), EMI shielding, and sensor technologies, with relevance to targeted drug release systems. Its research also includes water splitting for hydrogen energy and wastewater treatment processes, alongside the synthesis, characterization, and applications of inorganic materials. A strong materials portfolio is built around carbon nanomaterials such as graphite, graphene, and derivatives, as well as natural inorganic materials and hybrids including metal oxides, minerals, clays, zeolites, and MOFs.
Instrumental Analysis Laboratory, led by Prof. Dr. İsmail Tuncer Değim, provides advanced analytical capabilities supporting pharmaceutical and natural product research. It develops spectrophotometric, fluorimetric, and chromatographic methods, and also designs colorimetric methods for detecting explosives and antioxidants. The laboratory performs active pharmaceutical ingredient characterization, isolation and structural elucidation of natural compounds, and the determination of chemical compounds in medicinal plants, serving as a well-equipped hub for high-quality instrumental and method-development work.
