Message from the Coordinator
Biruni University Turkish Language Teaching Application and Research Center (Biruni TÖMER) is an academic center that conducts educational, practical, and research activities in the field of teaching Turkish as a foreign language. The Center is named after the renowned Turkish scholar Abu Rayhan al-Biruni, a prominent figure in the history of world science, and continues its academic approach in line with this scientific heritage. Biruni TÖMER operates with the aim of providing systematic and high-quality Turkish language education to international students who wish to learn Turkish.
The educational programs offered by the Center are structured in accordance with the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages (CEFR). Instructional materials are prepared based on defined levels, objectives, and learning outcomes, and assessment practices are aligned with these outcomes. Turkish language courses are offered year-round at A1, A2, B1, B2, and C1 levels. The primary goal of the programs is to develop students’ listening, speaking, reading, and writing skills in a balanced and functional manner. Courses are conducted face-to-face on weekdays, with A1 and A2 levels consisting of 160 hours, B1 and B2 levels 175 hours, and C1 level 200 hours of instruction.
The academic staff at Biruni TÖMER consist of qualified instructors who hold degrees in Turkish Language Teaching or Turkish Language and Literature. Teaching materials are prepared by instructors in consideration of students’ linguistic needs and their applicability to daily life. Through its programs, the Center aims to promote the Turkish language and culture at an international level.
Language instruction at Biruni TÖMER is delivered with careful attention to the cultural context of the language. Classroom activities include speaking practices, writing workshops, and culture-focused exercises, while extracurricular activities involve visits to Istanbul’s historical and cultural sites to encourage students to use the language in authentic contexts. In this way, the Center adopts a holistic and practice-oriented approach to language teaching.

Mission
To provide individuals who wish to learn Turkish with listening, speaking, reading, and writing skills through programs structured in accordance with the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages (CEFR); to teach Turkish as a foreign or second language within its cultural context; and to conduct educational processes in a way that supports and enhances learners’ motivation.
